The 844.1  m above sea level NHN high Breitenberg , located in the Thuringian Slate Mountains deep in the forest between Steinach and Steinheid , is the most remote of the highest mountain ranges in the Sonneberg district . It can only be reached via hiking trails. The shortest routes lead from Fellberg above Steinach to the west or from Neumannsgrund along the Steinbach, a tributary of the Grümpen , to the east into the massif. The mountain faces south and is counted as part of the southern high slate mountains .

In the south of the main summit, the Kallenberg (808 m), the Kleine (811 m) and the Große Mittelberg (826 m) join. In the south-west of the massif, the Straßenberg (756 m) rises above the Theuerer Grund, the eastern flank of which extends to Rauenstein . The Buhler (828 m) rises further to the east and the Fellberg in the far east opposite the Reckberg (829 m). The foothills Wasserberg (798 m), Rothenberg (714 m) and Strohberg (692 m) reach in the southeast of the massif to Mengersgereuth-Hammern , Fichtacher Berg (507 m), Kienberg (505.5 m) and Burkertsberg (498 m) in the south to Effelder .
