Brewster is a city ( City ) in Okanogan County in the State of Washington . At the 2010 United States Census , Brewster had 2,370 residents.

history

Brewster was founded in 1896. A post office called Brewster has been in operation since 1898. The city derives its name from John Bruster, a settler pioneer.

geography

Brewster is located at the confluence of the Okanogan and Columbia Rivers . According to the United States Census Bureau , the city occupies a total of 3.08 square kilometers, which does not include water. The thirty-bed Three Rivers Hospital is the county's largest hospital. The Brewster radio telescope is the northernmost of ten elements in the Very Long Baseline Array .

2010 Census

According to the 2010 census , Brewster had 2,370 residents, 699 households, and 535 families. The population density was 769 per km ². There were 730 housing units at an average density of 236.8 per km².

The population consisted of 50.8% white , 0.3% African American , 2.2% Indian , 0.2% Asian , 43% other "races" and 3.5% two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 73% of the population.

Of the 699 households, 54.5% had children under the age of 18, 52.9% were run by married couples living together , 15.6% by single mothers and 8% by single fathers; 23.5% were non-families. 20.5% of the households were singles and 10% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 3.31 and the average family size was 3.81 people.

The median age in the city was 27.6 years. 35.1% of the population were under 18, 11.1% between 18 and 24, 26.4% between 25 and 44, 17.2% between 45 and 64 and 10, 65 years or older. 50.4% of the population were men and 49.6% women.

Census 2000

As of the 2000 census , Brewster had 2,189 residents, 662 households, and 485 families. The population density was 704.3 per km ². There were 739 housing units at a mean density of 237.8 per km².

The population consisted of 54.91% white , 0.37% African American , 2.28% Indian , 0.27% Asian , 38.78% other "races" and 3.38 % % from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 59.5% of the population.

Of the 662 households, 49.2% had children under the age of 18, 53.3% were run by married couples living together , 13.6% by single mothers; 26.6% were non-families. 23.4% of the households were singles and 14.8% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 3.23 and the average family size was 3.8.

The median age in the city was 27 years. 35.3% of the population were under 18, 11.7% between 18 and 24, 26.7% between 25 and 44, 14.6% between 45 and 64 and 11.7 65 years or older. There were 93 men for every 100 women, and 90.2 men for every 100 women over the age of 18.

All information on median income relates to the median. The median household income was US $ 21,556 compared to US $ 22,381 for families. Men had a median income of US $ 15,652 compared to US $ 16,154 for women. The per capita income was US $ 9,555. About 29.1% of families and 31.7% of the total population lived below the poverty line ; this affected 38% of those under 18 and 16.4% of those over 65.
