Britannia is a British historical drama series directed by Jez Butterworth . It is the first co-production between Sky Original Production and Amazon's Prime Video . The series focuses on the struggle between the Romans and the Celts . In AD 43, the quarreling Celts must work together to save Britain from being conquered by the Romans .
action
In AD 43, the Roman legion, led by Aulus Plautius, set its sights on a new conquest: Britain. He wants to achieve what Julius Caesar never succeeded: subjugating Britain as a province to Emperor Claudius' empire. Aulus invades the country with 20,000 soldiers, but the quarreling Celts are already fighting back. The Celtic princess Kerra of the Cantii tribe and Queen Antedia of the Regni tribe are arch rivals. The role of the druids has often remained in the dark, their actions and manipulations seem to follow ancient prophecies. To prepare for battle, they summon powerful forces from the underworld.

reception
Felix Böhme from the industry portal Serienjunkies.de thinks that the “historical epic Britannia ” moves “somewhere between hard, complex historical drama and a supernatural feverish dream”. He goes on to say that the calculation “surprisingly works, at least for the majority of the extra-long pilot episode”. In addition, there is “a very unique, eye-catching design”.
In a later season review on Serienjunkies.de , Felix Böhme assesses the entire series: “The historical series Britannia is a surprise of the series year 2018. The courage of the makers to break with genre conventions, the unusual implementation and the refreshing otherness pay off: The epic narrative is a colorful, entertaining trip into the unknown. "
