Brno dolni nádraží (German "Brno lower station") is a train station in the Czech city ​​of Brno at the address Rosická 505 / 1a. It was originally built as the starting point for the Brno-Rossitzer Railway ("Rossitzer Bahnhof").

history

As early as 1839 with the construction of the Emperor Ferdinand's Northern Railway , Brno received its first train station, also known as the Northern Railway Station. The city got the second station in 1849 in connection with the construction of the Imperial and Royal Northern State Railway from Brno to Bohemian Trübau ( Česká Třebová ). This station was built as a joint station with the KFNB.

The third station was the Rossitz station in 1856 (today Brno dolní nádraží / Brünn Unterer Bahnhof) at the end of Dornrössel-Gasse (ulica Trnitá) in the district of Trnitá. There the route of the Brno-Rossitz railway began via Strelitz ( Střelice ) after God's blessing (today Zastávka ) with its coal mines.

When the line from Strelitz to Grusbach ( Hrušovany nad Jevišovkou ) opened in 1870 and the connection to the Eastern Railway was established, the line was not connected to Ober-Gerspitz ( Horní Heršpice ), but through the Rossitz train station via a connection to the state train station. The connection was made on a high embankment and ended in the station of the StEG (state train station). The Rossitz railway station was converted into a freight yard in the same train and in 1877 the Brno-Rossitz railway was completely taken over by the StEG.

Between 1883 and 1888 the route to the Vlarapass ( Brno – Vlárský průsmyk ) was built. A connecting curve from this state railway line via Židenice to the line to Böhmisch Trübau and on to Prague was also set up. Also in 1886 the line from God's blessing (Zastávka) to Iglau (Jihlava) was extended with a connection to the Austrian Northwest Railway. So now this train from Jihlava ran via Strelitz (Střelice) to the Rossitz train station. As early as 1870, the priv. Austro-Hungarian state railway company leased the Strelitz-Brno section of the Brno-Rossitz railway and finally took over the BRE in 1877. The traffic thus took place entirely on the tracks of the privately owned Austro-Hungarian state railway company. From the Rossitz train station the state train station could be reached via the above-mentioned connection or via Czernowitz directly to Wlarapass.

In 1885 the state railway line Brno-Tischnowitz ( Brno-Tišnov ) was opened. Coming from Tischnowitz, this flows into the Zwitta ( Svitava ) in the route from Böhmisch Trübau ( Česká Třebová ) and thus reached the state train station. Since 1890, the line along the Zwitta has been extended to the Brno – Vlárský průsmyk (Wlarapass) line and thus also reaches the Rossitz train station (no longer available today), especially for goods traffic. After the local railway Deutschbrod – Saar (Německý Brod – Žďár) opened in 1898 and the gap between Žďár – Tišnov was closed by this in 1905, Německý Brod (Deutsch Brod), today Havlíčkův Brod , could be reached continuously from Brno.

Since the station renovation in 1902–1905 and the nationalization in 1908, the North or State Railway Station is likely to be called “hlavní nádraží” and the Rossitz station “Lower Station”, ie “dolní nádraží”. In the literature listed, the main station was sometimes also called "Oberer", the Rossitz station "Unterer".

In 1927, a large connecting curve was built, starting from the north station to the south via Komarov to the Wlarapass line near Černovice, so that all lines can now begin or end in the main station without any problems.

In 1953, the Brno – Tišnov line was re -routed as part of the construction of the two-track main line Brno – Havlíčkův Brod . It no longer leads through the urban area from Zábrdovice and Husovice to Královo Pole, but is led with the Brno – Česká Třebová route, which in turn has been re-routed in the Brno-Maloměřice area. After Brno-Maloměřice the route then swings in a large curve to the west and joins the old route in Královo Pole. The Havlíčkův Brod – Žďár nad Sázavou section was given up in the same year.

The direct connection of the Rossitz train station to the former state train station no longer exists today and is partly built over. It was demolished in 1970. However, a small part was preserved when the Vaňkovka shopping center was built.

Between July 13 and August 11, 2013, after more than 140 years, passenger trains stopped again in Brno dolni nádraží. The reason for this was the closure of the Brno – Česká Třebová railway line between Brno hlavní nádraží and Brno-Židenice due to bridge renovation work. During this time, the Eurocity and Express trains between Břeclav and Prague and the passenger trains on the S3 line were diverted via Brno dolni nádraží. A makeshift platform was built for this purpose.

From June 3 to September 10, 2017, due to construction work, passenger trains stopped again in Brno dolni nádraži.

Since the main train station in Brno (Brno hlavní nádraží) was not passable for all long-distance trains for the whole of 2019, the trains instead stopped at the Brno dolní nádraží station from December 2018 to December 2019.

The station has 3 platform edges for passenger traffic, ticket counters, electronic display boards and a pedestrian passage from the house platform 1 to platforms 2 and 3. In addition to the track systems, it consists of buildings from different eras, some of which are partially abandoned.
