Bruce Edward Melnick (born December 5, 1949 in New York City , New York ) is a retired American astronaut and officer in the American Coast Guard .

education

After graduating from high school in 1967, Melnick studied engineering. He first attended Georgia Technical College before moving to the Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut. This awarded him a bachelor's degree in engineering in 1972 . He then studied aeronautical engineering at the University of West Florida and received a master's degree in 1975 .

Melnick was a member of the American Coast Guard for 20 years. Among other things, he was an operations officer and test pilot .

NASA activity

Melnick was established in June 1987 in the twelfth astronaut group (The gaffers) of NASA selected. After training as a mission specialist , he worked in various support teams at the Kennedy Space Center .

Melnick made his first space mission as a member of the STS-41 crew . The flight was operated by the space shuttle Discovery in October 1990 and deployed the Ulysses solar probe .

Melnick's second and final space mission took place two years later and was the maiden flight of the orbiter Endeavor . STS-49 flew to the INTELSAT F-3 satellite, launched in March 1990, which had been launched in a wrong orbit. The satellite was fitted with a new upper stage that put it into geostationary orbit.

He spent a total of 12 days, 23 hours and 27 minutes (approx. 300 hours) in space. Melnick was the first American Coast Guard astronaut .

According to NASA

In 1992, Melnick retired from both the Coast Guard and NASA and joined the Lockheed Space Operations Company . In 1994 he moved to United Space Alliance , in 1996 to McDonnell Douglas , which merged with Boeing in 1997 . Melnick was responsible at the Kennedy Space Center for all services that Boeing provided there for NASA and the US Department of Defense. This included not only the space shuttle's payloads, but also Delta rockets . Melnick left Boeing on April 1, 2007.

Others

On April 28, 2001, Melnick received an honorary degree from the University of West Florida for his services to the natural sciences. He lives with his wife and two children on Merritt Iceland ( Florida ).
