geography
location
The Bruchberg is located in the core zone of the Harz National Park, southeast of the core town of the mountain town of Altenau , southwest of the Altenau district of Torfhaus and a little north of Sankt Andreasberg , a district of Braunlage . To the northeast, the mountain falls over the rocky cliffs of the steep wall into the Kellwassertal with the Flörichshaier Graben , and to the southeast to the Oderteich . In the south-west, the mountain goes over to the mountain range Auf dem Acker at about the federal road 242 and in the north-west it falls to Altenau and thus to the valley of the Oker .
Summit and Wolfswarte
The Bruchberg is a loosely wooded plateau with a gently rising summit (approx. 927 m ). About 700 m north-northeast of it is the Wolfswarte (approx. 918 m ; ⊙ ), a woodless knoll made of weathered Acker-Bruchberg quartzite. If the visibility is good, the Brocken, for example, can be seen from there . The rocky Wolfswarte can be seen well from the Glockenberg in Altenau, from Schulenberg and also from Torfhaus.
Bark beetle infestation
The Bruchberg is partly overgrown with trees, which on the sunlit south side have largely died from bark beetle infestation (see photo below). A new and more species-rich natural forest is currently emerging here after bark beetle damage.
hike
From Altenau, the Wolfswarter Weg , also known as the Oberer Bruchbergweg in the upper part , leads past the Okerstein almost directly up to the Wolfswarte. The path is connected to the Steile-Wand-Straße Altenau – Torfhaus via several connecting paths . The easiest way to get to the Wolfswarte is to branch off onto the last connecting path at about 760 m above sea level, just before the first parking lot on the steep wall and after a few hundred meters onto the steep and natural Butterstieg . There is also a direct 4 km long path up from Torfhaus.
The Wolfswarte has been included since 2007 as No. 135 in the system of stamp offices of the Harz hiking pin.
Ski cross
The ski cross of the Altenau Ski Club has stood a little east of the Bruchberg summit since 1921 , originally only to commemorate those who fell in World War I (1914–1918), later also to commemorate those of the Second World War (1939–1945). Because it was in a quiet zone of the national park, it could only be visited once a year for the memorial service. On September 8, 2008, the restored monument with its wooden cross including letters ( "Ski Club Altenau - 1914/18 - 1939/1945" ) made of iron was moved to a new location near the publicly accessible Wolfswarte .
