Bruji (from Burgenland- Croatian brujati in German "it hums, it drones") is a music group founded in Burgenland ( Austria ) which, according to its own definition, makes "Krowodn-Rock". Most of their songs are in Burgenland- Croatian, but often also in mixed languages, i.e. German and Burgenland-Croatian. With their appearance, concerts and records, Bruji have made and continue to make an essential, identity-forming contribution to the self-confidence of Burgenland Croats.

history

Emergence

Bruji emerged from the cover band "The Brew" (founded in 1969) in a relatively fluid process, which is also reflected in the composition of the group.

The Brew was founded in 1968 by the three Borištofci / Warasdorfers Rudi and Poli Berlaković and Joža Linzer. Then the group got Joško Vlasich as guitarist and Ignac Karall to play the organ. After Poli Berlaković left the band, Berti Šolić joined the band, and instruments were also swapped internally. In 1975 Hansi Palatin took the place of Joža Linzer, who had died from a serious illness.

The hit "Marijana", which they found in the Wurlitzer near the "Zidor", one of the two inns in Veliki Borištof / Großwarasdorf , played a decisive influence on the group . It inspired Bruji to include songs from what was then Yugoslavia in their program - which was unique in Austria.

With their first single "Rozmarija raste" (in German "the rosemary grows"), a reinterpretation of a Burgenland-Croatian folk song, the group created an ethno-pop piece in 1976 . It was interesting that this happened much earlier than in what was then Yugoslavia, where it was also taken up later, especially by the Bijelo dugme .

"The Brew" becomes "Bruji"

During the second half of the 1970s , the line-up of the group (then called "The Brew") changed again. Ignac Karall and Hansi Palatin were replaced by Toni Perušić from Unterpullendorf and Josef Sari from Oberpullendorf . With this change, new ideas and goals came - the Krowodn rock was born and, according to the new concept, in 1980 the new name Bruji selected.

The last line-up change also took place in this phase, when Rudi Berlaković (mayor of Großwarasdorf since 2012 ), Bert Šolić and Hansi Palatin left the group and Werner, Rudi Karall and Klaus Bittner were found in their place.

The new Krowodn-Rock songs were now more critical and louder, such as B. "Gemma Krowodn schaun", in which the careless and disrespectful treatment of the Burgenland Croats minority is sung about, or the song "Nema Problema" (German: "There is (eh) no problem") which describes the conscious assimilation policy of Austrian politics denounced. These lyrics and music hit the nerve of the burgeoning self-confidence and the politically committed, young Burgenland Croats, who soon turned these songs into unofficial hymns.

Current composition

The band currently consists of five members Klaus Bittner (drums), Werner Karall (bass), Rudi Karall (electric guitar), Toni Perušić (keyboard / keyboard accordion) and frontman Joško Vlasich (vocal), with the instruments can also vary in the case of unplugged performances. Sometimes tamburica instruments are then used.

Musical collaborations

The most prominent guests on their albums were Toni Stricker and Willi Resetarits , the former playing the violin on the newly designed and extremely melancholy folk song "Gusla mi se j 'potrla" (in German roughly "My violin is broken"), and by Willi Resetarits the song "Muž kod puž" (German: "A man like a snail") was recorded.

Social engagement instead of commercial success

The group was never able to celebrate a real commercial breakthrough, although they made it into the Ö3 charts in the 1980s with the bilingual single Sviraj brate, Tambure (in German: "Play me on the tambure, brother!") .

Nevertheless, Bruji got with their music well beyond the musical horizon of Burgenland and Burgenland Croats. They toured Austria and performed at numerous concerts all over Europe (including even in the GDR at the "Festival of Political Song"). In their (relative) level of awareness, the social commitment, which lies in their roots, may also have played a role. For example, in 1993 Bruji played at the SOS Sea of Lights , the largest demonstration of the Second Republic .

Evidence of this social commitment can be found in a speech by Peter Wagner in which he particularly emphasized & emphasized this in 1995 , on the occasion of the CD presentation of simo tamo - back and forth . Further evidence can be found in the two guest appearances on benefit CDs and concerts.

The résumés of the (former) members are further evidence of the group's socio-political commitment. The founding member Rudi Berlaković has been mayor of the Großwarasdorf / Veliki Borištof community since 2012 , while Joško Vlasich was a member of the Burgenland state parliament from 2000 to 2010 . In addition, the cultural center "KUGA" ( Ku lturna Zadru ga , in German "Cultural Association") was founded in the vicinity of the Bruji and, largely by Joško Vlasich, raised it to an institutional basis. The KUGA is now a nationally known cultural center in which cabaret, pop music and festivals with (inter) national greats ( Roland Düringer , Alfred Dorfer , The Dubliners , Russkaja , Momčilo Bajagić Bajaga , Stefan Hantel , Tony Wegas , Hans Söllner , Hans Theessink , Kurt Ostbahn , etc.) as well as "local" events and balls, as well as social activities that contribute to a sense of community (VHS courses, sports courses, child care during the summer holidays ...).
