description
Vegetative characteristics
Brunfelsia americana is a shrub that usually grows up to 4.5 m high or a small tree up to 10 m high . The leaves are stalked and elliptical, elliptical-elongated or, conversely, ovoid. The leaf blade is about 4 to 7.5 cm long, the petioles are about 4 mm long.
Inflorescences and flowers
The inflorescences consist of a single flower . The approximately 0.6 mm long calyx is bell-shaped and as long as the flower stem , the five calyx teeth are rounded. The crown is initially pale yellow and fades with age, occasionally the coronet is striped purple. With a length of 5 to 6.25 cm, the corolla tube is eight to ten times as long as the calyx and three times as long as the diameter of the coronet, and it is often curved at the top. The corolla lobes are rounded and have entire margins.
There are usually four stamens present, rarely a fifth stamen is formed. In the area of the scar , the stamens are slightly bent. The pollen is triporate (three-pore) or possibly tricolporate (three-pore).
fruit
The capsule fruits are fleshy yellow-orange and measure about 1.5 cm in diameter.
Chromosome number
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.
Occurrence
The species occurs on several of the West Indies and grows there on rocky coasts. It is the only species of the genus that is also found on some islands in the Lesser Antilles , but can also be found in Puerto Rico and on the eastern tip of Hispaniola . The range includes the islands: Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia and the Virgin Islands.
