Bubeneč (German Bubentsch ) is a district in the north of Prague . The community, first mentioned in 1197, was elevated to a town in 1904 and incorporated into the municipality in 1922. The district on the left bank of the Vltava is one of the most popular residential areas in Prague due to its many green spaces and its proximity to the center.

Rich archaeological artifacts from the Neolithic to the early Middle Ages have been found in Bubeneč since the 19th century. The Stone Age plow marks discovered in 2011 are the oldest in the Czech Republic and point to prehistoric agriculture.

The settlement was originally called Přední Ovenec (Vorder Owenetz) . Zadní Ovenec (Hinter-Owenetz) was the name for the neighboring today's district of Troja . The first mention of Ovenec comes from a document from 1197 in which it is listed as the property of the Teplá Monastery . The church consecrated to St. Gotthard is documented for the year 1313.

Výstaviště (exhibition area)

In 1840 Bubeneč received the status of an independent municipality. During this whole time the area was dominated by agriculture. In the second half of the 19th century, the Prague suburbs grew in connection with industrialization and the construction of railways. In 1891 the Prague exhibition grounds were built on the occasion of the anniversary exhibition . Although it is formally located in the Bubeneč district, it is closer to the built-up area of neighboring Holešovice .

On October 26, 1904, Bubeneč was raised to town by Emperor Franz Joseph I and also received a town coat of arms. Bubeneč became part of Prague on January 1, 1922 as part of the formation of Greater Prague. Together with the also incorporated localities Dejvice , Sedlec , Veleslavín and Vokovice, Bubeneč then formed the XIX. District of Prague.

Since 1960 Bubeneč has been divided between the districts of Prague 6 and Prague 7 . Despite the division, there is still a district identity.

Today there are several embassies in the villa districts of Bubenec, including the Dutch, Belgian, Mexican and Chinese.
