Stanley Raymond 'Bucky' Harris (born November 8, 1896 in Port Jervis , New York , † November 8, 1977 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American baseball player and manager in Major League Baseball .
biography
Harris learned the game of baseball in the mining areas of Pennsylvania . In 1915 his sports career began in the minor leagues , four years later he made the leap to the Washington Senators as a second baseman . In 1924 he also took over the position of manager with the Senators, at the age of 27 Harris was the youngest manager in the entire league. At the end of the year, the club's greatest success was even in the annals. Against the New York Giants , the Senators won their only World Series title in a competitive series with 4-3 victories.
After another title in the American League in 1925, they lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series 3: 4. The Detroit Tigers signed Harris in 1929, also here he was both player and manager. Further stations with the Boston Red Sox and again the Senators followed. He was fired mid-season from the Philadelphia Phillies in 1943.
Interludes in the minor leagues followed until Harris took over the New York Yankees in 1947 and was able to celebrate another World Series victory. He left the Yankees after the 1948 season, his last managerial positions were the Senators and the Detroit Tigers.
The Veterans Committee elected Bucky Harris to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975 .
