Arthur Worth "Bud" Collins, Jr. (born June 17, 1929 in Lima , Ohio , United States ; † March 4, 2016 in Brookline , Massachusetts ) was an American journalist and television tennis commentator .

biography

education

After graduating from Berea High School in 1947, Collins studied at Baldwin-Wallace College - also in Berea, Ohio - and after serving in the US Army at Boston University . From 1959 to 1963 he worked as a tennis coach at Brandeis University in Waltham (Massachusetts) .

Journalist career

Bud Collins began writing for the Boston Herald as a sports journalist . At the time he was still a student at Boston University. In 1963 he moved to the Boston Globe and began commenting on tennis for the Boston public broadcasting service WGBH-TV. From 1968 to 1972 he worked for CBS Sports during the US Open and from 1972 for NBC Sports during the Wimbledon Championships .

He was also a politics columnist during his years with the Boston Globe . In 1967 he ran for the office of mayor of Boston .

After 35 years at NBC, the broadcaster did not want to renew its contract with Bud Collins. The American refused to retire and signed with ESPN2 in August 2007.

other activities

Collins authored several books on tennis. Among others with Rod Laver The Education of a Tennis Player (1971), with Evonne Goolagong Evonne! On the Move (1974) and his memoir My Life With the Pros (1989). He produced several tennis encyclopedias such as The Modern Encyclopedia of Tennis , the Bud Collins Tennis Encyclopedia and Total Tennis . In 1994 he was accepted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame because of his services to tennis .
