The Buków Mountains (Polish: Pogórze Bukowskie ) consists of foothills of the Central Beskid Foothills in southern Poland in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship . Its highest peak is the Żurawinka with 667 m.

geography

The mountains border on the Jasło Mountains in the west , in the east it extends to the Sanok Basin and the Saana Mountains , in the south on the Bukowica ridge in the Lower Beskids and in the north on the Jasło-Krosno Basin . It is located between the San rivers in the east and Jasiołka in the west. The Osława and Wisłok rivers flow through the mountains .

history

The area was already inhabited by the Przeworsk people in ancient times , and two ancient tombs are located in the mountains.

After 1340, Casimir the Great settled the forest German . In addition to the Polonized Forest Germans , Dolinianie , Lemken and Wallachians also lived in the mountains .

At this time, numerous castles and fortresses were built in the mountains that protected the border between Poland and Hungary, such as Sobień Castle , Lesko Castle , Sanok Royal Castle and Nowotaniec Castle .

The First Hungarian-Galician Railway connected the cities with Hungary through the mountains .

The Buków Mountains, along with the surrounding areas, are the oldest oil-producing areas in the world.

Cities

On the eastern edge of the mountains lies Sanok and on the northern edge Krosno .

War cemeteries

At the beginning of the First World War, bitter fighting raged in the mountains between the Russian army, which had occupied the area since 1914, and the Austro-Hungarian army, which wanted to recapture Galicia. In May 1915, the Bosnian associations attacked the Don Cossacks on the Wisłok River . The military cemetery for this two-day battle is in Bukowsko .

In 1944, during the Second World War, the mountains were the scene of the Soviet Operation Dukla .
