Federal seal is the name for the uniformly designed official seal of organs and authorities in the Federal Republic of Germany .

With the decree on the official seal (DSiegelErl) of January 20, 1950 ( Federal Law Gazette 1950, p. 26), Federal President Theodor Heuss introduced the federal seal in its two forms at the suggestion of the Federal Government . It goes back to the state seal of the German Reich , which was designed by Sigmund von Weech in 1921, during the Weimar Republic .

The size and design of the official seals for federal authorities are prescribed (inscription in roman capital as capitals , diameter of the seal between 3 and 4 cm, execution as embossed seal or color printing seal possible). Exceptions to this are also only permitted with special approval from the Federal Minister of the Interior.

The authorization for companies to produce the large and small federal seal is granted by the Federal Office of Administration in Cologne . An address directory of the companies authorized to manufacture is also kept there. Important requirements are required for authorization to produce the federal seal. Not only content, size and shape are prescribed, but also the fonts to be used.
