The Albrechtsberg Castle on the Große Krems is a listed hilltop castle with the attached Albrechtsberg Parish Church on a hill in Albrechtsberg on the Große Krems in the Krems-Land in Lower Austria .

history

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1230 with Konrad von Albrechtsperge . In 1263 Gundakar von Starhemberg was in possession of the rule. In 1377 it was made by Rüdiger d. J. von Starhemberg sold to Ulrich von Neidegg. The castle remained in the possession of the Protestant Neidegger until 1527. It suffered severe damage in the Hussite Wars . The expansion to the castle took place under knight Erasmus von Peuckham who acquired the rule from the Neideggern. During the Thirty Years' War, the imperial troops under Charles Bonaventure de Longueval again wreaked havoc in 1619 . Hans Bernhard von Peuckham died of consequences of the fighting the following year. The related Christoph Wilhelm Veldendorf received the rule in 1630. After his death in 1652, Hans Bernhard Zägkhler bought the facility, but ten years later it was sold to Marshal Matthias Ernst Spindler. He brought the castle, which he had further expanded, into a Fideikommiß and bequeathed it to his grandson Hans Karl Ignaz Lemagh in 1695. It remained with his descendants until the second half of the 20th century, when Karl Lemagh, the last of his family, sold it. The paleontologist Edith Kristan-Tollmann and the geologist Alexander Tollmann purchased the castle and lived here.

description

The towering, irregular complex dates largely from the second half of the 16th century. It is characterized by its guard and defense towers protruding from the high, crenellated circular wall with numerous key notches . The three-storey, multi-wing complex has three courtyards, access from the south through a round arched portal with the designation 1675 in the gable field and a main gate in the northeast with a machicolation . In one courtyard there is a groin vaulted arcade on squat columns. Other special features include a smoke kitchen with a pyramid chimney, groin vaulted rooms, a wooden ceiling marked 1604 and a bulk box from the 18th century with a crooked roof . The Neidegger's burial place is located in the castle chapel .
