The castle was first mentioned in 1331 as the property of Rorich von Uetgenbach (1312-1345), who has called himself Herr zu Ehrenstein since then . Later it came into the possession of the gentlemen von Nesselrode , who owned the castle until it was relinquished in 1993.

During the Thirty Years War the castle was destroyed by Swedish troops and has not been rebuilt since then.

investment

Today the ruin is freely accessible and was cleared of vegetation in 2006.

The artillery tower in front , which protrudes from the forest above the monastery in the valley, is the most striking appearance of the ruin.

End of 2006, the offshore tower and the round are Ringmauer - Flankierungsturm yet received the full amount. Significant remains of the reinforced attack side of the central pentagonal residential tower are still present, the weaker side walls have partially crumbled down to the foundation walls . The gatehouse facing the monastery can only be guessed at.

Extensive security and reconstruction work has been underway since 2007, and in 2010 the north-eastern curtain wall was completely restored. The restoration work is currently ongoing.

Due to the deletion from the land register , the castle ruins have been considered " ownerless " since 1993 . The restoration work is financed by the local community and the Asbach community as well as state funds.
