course

The Mehrbach rises in the north of the Westerwald north of Werkhausen , near the border between Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia , and flows south. On its way to the Wied it first crosses the districts of Werkhausen, Hasselbach and Forstmehren . Then it forms the border between the local communities Ersfeld and Kraam and runs through the village of Mehren in a south-westerly direction . South of Hirz-Maulsbach to the mouth of the river, the Mehrbach forms the border between the Neuwied district on the right and the Altenkirchen district on the left, with an interruption at Dasbach . In the district of Neuwied, the Mehrbach only touches the local community Asbach (Westerwald) with the districts and hamlets Altenhofen , Niedermühlen , Kapaunsmühle , Diefenau , Altenburg and Ehrenstein ; in the district of Altenkirchen the communities Kescheid and Rott one after the other . From the hamlet of Dasbach to the confluence with the Wied near Ehrenstein Monastery , the Mehrbach flows through the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park .

Tributaries

From the source, the tributaries on the left are the Werkhausener Bach, the Weyerbuscher Bach and the Ahlbach. The tributaries on the right are the Retterserbach brooks ( also called Peschbach in its source area Scherenbach and near Ersfeld ), Friesbach, Maulsbach, Hirzbach and Krumbach.

history

In its middle and lower course, the Mehrbach formed the border between different sovereign territories for centuries.

From the confluence of the Hirzbach to the confluence with the Wied, the right side of the Mehrbach belonged to the Electorate of Cologne from the middle of the 13th century to 1803 , and then shortly until 1806 to the Principality of Wied-Runkel. The left side of the Mehrbach belonged, with a brief interruption in the 17th century, to the County of Sayn and finally to the County of Sayn-Hachenburg until 1799 , then to the Principality of Nassau-Weilburg until 1806 .

From 1806 both sides of the Mehrbach belonged to the Duchy of Nassau and from 1815 to the Kingdom of Prussia and the administrative district of Koblenz . As part of the Prussian administrative structure, in 1816 the previous right-hand side of the Electorate of Cologne came to the Neuwied district and the previous left-hand side of Sayn to the Altenkirchen district.

At the same time, the Mehrbach also formed a denominational boundary for a long time. The villages to the left of the Mehrbach had belonged to the Lutheran and later also to the Reformed denomination since the middle of the 16th century , while the villages to the right of the Mehrbach remained Catholic .

In 1986, the sculptor and painter put Erwin Wortelkamp at Hasselbach in a location accessible to the public and influenced by the course of more Bach's 10-hectare sculpture park, in the valley , on the design of more than 40 artists and landscape designers participated.
