history
The name Altenburg is derived from a prehistoric refugee castle to the southeast of the village , which is also called "Boddems Nück" and the remains of which are still visible today.
In the first documentary mention in 1496, a farm belonging to the Lords of Ehrenstein is mentioned.
Altenburg belonged to the Electorate of Cologne until 1803 . The place was part of the " Honnschaft Schöneberg", which belonged to the parish of Asbach and was under the administration of the Electoral Cologne office of Altenwied . According to an inventory ordered by Cologne Elector Maximilian Heinrich in 1660, Altenburg had nine courtyards, two of which belonged to the nearby Ehrenstein Monastery . In 1787 40 houses with 109 inhabitants were counted, including craftsmen who worked for the Ehrenstein monastery.
After the Rhineland became part of Prussia in 1815 , Altenburg belonged to the Schöneberg community in the then newly formed Neuwied district and was initially administered by the Neustadt mayor and from 1823 by the Asbach mayor . According to a census in 1885, Altenburg had 233 inhabitants who lived in 50 houses.
In 1874 Altenburg got its own school, which was closed in the 1960s. The localities Diefenau , Kaltehöhe and Reeg also belonged to the school district . The St. Joseph's Chapel in the center of the village was built in 1929 by the village community from its own resources. 1931 received Altenburg own mailroom Class II in the district of the post office Asbach.
Until 1974 Altenburg was part of the previously independent community of Schöneberg . On March 16, 1974, the local community Asbach was newly formed from it and the communities of Asbach and Limbach, which were dissolved at the same time, and part of the community of Elsaff . In 1987 Altenburg had 277 inhabitants.
