Graben is part of the local community Asbach in the Neuwied district in northern Rhineland-Palatinate . The place is characterized by agriculture.

geography

The hamlet is located in the Niederwesterwald northeast of the main town Asbach. In the east, Graben borders on the district of Hirz-Maulsbach in the Altenkirchen district . Graben can be reached via the district road 61, which connects the place with the Asbach district Limbach and the Hirz-Maulsbach district Hähnen.

history

The place Graben takes its name from the two Cologne and Saynian land forces , which secured the border between the two territories from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century and ran close to the place. The two militia were trenched and Gebück provided between the two was no man's land, which was several hundred meters wide and sometimes persecuted offered some protection.

Graben belonged to the Electorate of Cologne and the Altenwied office and was part of the " Limbach Honnschaft ". According to an inventory ordered by the Cologne Elector Maximilian Heinrich in 1660, Graben had two courtyards. In 1787 there were 18 inhabitants in Graben who lived in six courtyards.

After the Rhineland came to Prussia in 1815 , Graben belonged to the Limbach community in the then newly formed Neuwied district and was administered by the Asbach mayor . According to a census from 1885, Graben had 52 inhabitants who lived in 10 houses.

Until 1974, Graben was part of the then independent municipality of Limbach . On March 16, 1974, the local community Asbach was newly formed from it and the communities of Asbach and Schöneberg, which were dissolved at the same time, as well as part of the community of Elsaff .
