Hinterplag is a district of the local community Asbach in the Neuwied district in northern Rhineland-Palatinate . The place is characterized by agriculture, but is increasingly developing into a place of residence in the sense of a residential community .

geography

The village is located in the Niederwesterwald south of the main town Asbach above and east of the Pfaffenbachtal . In the north Hinterplag borders the district Asbacher Thelen mountain , to the east by the districts roads and Oberplag and to the south by about Neustadt (Wied) belonging place Vogtslag . Hinterplag can only be reached via Kreisstraße 39, which connects the town with Landesstraße 255 (Asbach - Neustadt).

history

The three places Oberplag , Hinterplag and Vogtslag formed a community that was collectively referred to as "Plag" since the Middle Ages. The main town was Hinterplag. Around 1475 a country school from the Electoral Cologne office of Altenwied had its seat in a small moated castle.

Hinterplag belonged to the electorate of Cologne from the Middle Ages until 1803 . The place was part of the " Honnschaft Schöneberg", which belonged to the parish of Asbach and was under the administration of the Electoral Cologne office of Altenwied . According to an inventory ordered by Cologne Elector Maximilian Heinrich in 1660, Oberplag and Hinterplag had nine courtyards; in 1787, 20 houses were counted here.

After the Rhineland became part of Prussia in 1815 , Hinterplag belonged to the Schöneberg community in the then newly formed Neuwied district and was initially administered by the Neustadt mayor and from 1823 by the Asbach mayor . According to a census from 1885, Hinterplag had 87 inhabitants who lived in 19 houses.

Until March 16, 1974, Hinterplag belonged to the previously independent community of Schöneberg , which was dissolved on the same date and merged into the newly formed local community Asbach. In 1987 Hinterplag had 112 inhabitants.

Hinterplag basalt quarry

The former basalt quarry Hinterplag lies to the west of the village . It was one of the large basalt quarries of Basalt AG, founded in 1888 in the "Asbacher Land". In 1912 a cable car was built to Bennau , which enabled a connection to the Bröltalbahn . The dismantling was finally stopped in the mid-1980s. In 2003 the Asbacher Land working group for nature and environmental protection became the owner of the Hinterplag quarry. On an area of around four hectares, 223 species of higher plants have been registered here. In addition to a number of reptiles, seven different bat species live in the biotope.
