Surname
In documents from the end of the Middle Ages, the name Elsaff can be found for the Pfaffenbach, including its upper reaches .
The name of the Pfaffenbach is derived from the Heisterbach monks ( priests ) who had some goods in Neustadt an der Wied as well as pastoral care in the local parish from the middle of the 13th to the end of the 18th century . Countess Mechthild von Sayn gave the hospital of the Heisterbach Abbey in 1254 the church in Neustadt with patronage and tithes, along with tithes of her farms and estates in the parish of Neustadt. The way of the monks from Heisterbach to Neustadt led along the Pfaffenbach. A bridge over the Pfaffenbach between the villages of Hüngsberg (district of Windhagen ) and Prangenberg (district of Neustadt (Wied)) bears the name "Pfaffensteg".
