Schöneberg Castle

The castle Schöneberg , even Schoenberg, Schöneburg called, is the ruins of a hilltop castle on a 860-meter-high plateau in the hamlet of Schoenberg the community Betzigau in Oberallgäu in Bavaria .

history

The tower castle was inhabited from the 10th to the 11th century by the abbots of the Kempten monastery and by an unknown knight family. The castle was first mentioned in 1400 in the possession of Walter von Königsegg zu Wartenstein with the pledge to the knight Heinrich von Nauns. In 1405 the castle was redeemed and sold to the Kempten monastery , the prince abbot Friedrich von Laubenberg , which was confirmed in 1436 by the supreme feudal lord Emperor Sigmund .

From the 17th century, the castle fell into disrepair, and at the end of the 19th century still had a partially preserved four-story tower ruin, which lost three walls around 1950 when a water reservoir was installed. Around 1970 the moats were filled. In 2007 the municipality of Betzigau had renovation work carried out as part of the Leader Plus castle project “ Allgäu Castle Region” .

description

From the former castle complex on a castle hill 28 wide and five meters high at its base with a main castle and a northern outer castle , both surrounded by moats , only about four meters high wall remains of the square residential tower are preserved. The various remains of the tower walls point to the time around 1300. The neighboring farm is located on the former farm yard of the outer bailey. The Burgplatz is now a ground monument .
