Burgl Helbich-Poschacher , b. Wilburgis Poschacher , (* July 16, 1929 in Mauthausen ; † January 21, 2010 in Vienna ) was an Austrian entrepreneur and founder, long-time president and finally honorary president of the AIDS-Dienst-Malteser (ADM).

Life

Burgl Helbich-Poschacher comes from the Mauthausen stone dynasty of the Poschachers , married the Linz stonemason and later politician Leopold Helbich . In 1974 she co-founded the Poschach building materials trade . There were three children from his marriage to Leopold Helbich. The sons Anton and Leonhard took on management functions in the family company.

In the Sovereign Order of Malta , into which she was accepted in 1972, she was involved in the care of the elderly and the sick. An encounter with a young homeless person who was sick with AIDS at Salzburg's Mozartsteg in July 1992 led to her commitment to people with HIV and AIDS . She established contacts with the Otto Wagner Hospital and the Institute for Occupational and Social Medicine at the University of Vienna and, together with specialists and doctors, developed a concept for comprehensive care for AIDS patients. In the face of opposition from the Austrian leadership, she succeeded in founding the Malteser AIDS service . She accompanied and looked after numerous victims herself, actively promoted the establishment of the Viennese home nursing service HIV-mobil and supported the homeless project Lighthouse Vienna for HIV-positive people. She traveled regularly to South Africa, where she supported and advised the Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard relief organization of the Missionary Benedictine Minister Gerhard Lagleder .

Quote

“The misery and loneliness of the mostly young patients, the social exclusion and the supposed abandonment of God were our motivation. The scare tactics of the media, combined with the understandable fear of society that one could be infected, as well as the hasty judgment that the lifestyle of those affected is their own fault, made the situation of the sick even more difficult. But prejudice and fear are the wrong advice to face AIDS. "
