The Burgus on the Late Antique Danube Limes

The Burgus Thaldorf is a small late Roman military site ( Burgus ) near Thaldorf , a district of the municipality of Kelheim in the district of Kelheim , Bavaria . Clearly visible remains of its defense and its tower hill have been preserved on site. The location of the Burgus is in the parcel 1687 on a forest path, 1,300 meters west of the former Thaldorf-Weltenburg train station in the wooded northeastern gusset of district roads 18 and 21.

location

The Burgus built on the site of Thaldorf was built as a rear checkpoint on the Donausüdstraße , which is important for trade and the military , and was located between the late antique small fort Abusina ( Eining ) and the Burgus Untersaal . From there the road continued to Castra Regina ( Regensburg ), the garrison of the Legio III Italica, which was reduced in size by the 30s of the 4th century at the latest . Even today the embankment of the Donausüdstraße that leads directly past Burgus Thaldorf can still be seen in the area.

Building history

In order to secure the road to Regensburg in troubled times, the Burgus was built as a border security measure during late antiquity. Its date is still uncertain. It ranges from statements such as “at the latest” under Emperor Diocletian (284–305) to “ Valentine ” (364–375). A total of nine of these systems are known to date between Eining and Regensburg.

Some layers of the masonry may have been preserved from the Burgus, which measures around 19 × 13 or 25 × 13 meters, depending on the author. This is indicated by slightly raised edges of the system. There are also individual limestone stones lying freely on the surface. Johannes Pätzold reported in 1983 that he had also seen broken bricks here.

Two trenches with rounded corners encircle the structure. They are still at least a meter deep. The embankment between the two trenches is slightly towards the inner surface, but about 0.50 meters from the outside. From the location of the Burgus the soldiers could hardly see the Danube Limes even without trees. Her main focus was therefore on the street. The south-eastern outer ditch points to the Roman road Eining-Regensburg, which runs past it and which has been preserved at this point as a dead straight forest path. Perhaps a small quarry about 100 meters away can be linked to the construction of the watchtower.

Monument protection

The facilities mentioned are protected as registered ground monuments within the meaning of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) . Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to authorization, accidental finds must be reported to the monument authorities.
