Burning Witches is a Swiss heavy metal / power metal band from Brugg .

Band history

Foundation and first album

Romana Kalkuhl, guitarist at Atlas & Axis , had been looking for a line-up for an all-female metal band for a long time. Over the years she got to know different musicians and finally found the first line-up with Seraina Telli (vocals), Jeanine Grob ( bass ) and Lala Frischknecht ( drums ). In 2016 Alea Wyss completed the band. First a self-titled single was created , which was also the first demo of the band. This was named "Demo of the Month" in both Rock Hard and Metal Hammer .

In 2017, a self-titled in-house production was released, which was produced by VO Pulver ( Poltergeist , Gurd ) and Marcel “Schmier” Schirmer ( Destruction ). The album was distributed via the crowdfunding platform Pledge Music . With the song Jawbreaker , the album contains a cover version of a song by Judas Priest . The album reached number 73 on the Swiss album charts. Shortly after the release, the band began songwriting for their next album. On February 14, 2018, Nuclear Blast announced that they had signed the band.

Hexenhammer and Dance with the Devil

In the meantime, Alea Wyss has been replaced by Sonia Nusselder from the Netherlands . This was followed by a tour as the opening act for Grave Digger . A first album trailer was released on September 12, 2018. Three digital singles followed. The album Hexenhammer was released on November 9, 2018. It is not a concept album in the strict sense, although the book of the same name plays a role in some of the songs . With Holy Diver from the band Dio there is again a cover version on the album. The album reached number 43 in the German album charts and number 21 in Switzerland. In June 2019 the singer Seraina Telli left the band with the reason to devote herself to her own band Dead Venus . Her successor was Laura Guldemond from the Netherlands from the band Shadowrise .

In summer 2019, the band played at the Wacken Open Air , Summer Breeze and Rockharz Open Air festivals . The album Dance with the Devil , again produced by VO Pulver and Marcel “Schmier” Schirmer, was released on March 6, 2020. The album contains a cover version of the Manowar song Battle Hymn , in which Ross the Boss and Michael Lepond appear as guest musicians. Dance with the Devil rose to number 22 in the German and number 14 in the Swiss album charts. A few months later, Sonia Nusselder left the band after she founded the death metal band Crypta with the former Nervosa musicians Fernanda Lira and Luana Dametto . Larissa Ernst then took over the second guitar for the Burning Witches.

Music genre

The band is mainly shaped by the heavy metal of the 1980s, while the musicians also listen to other music. Nusselder also plays in the death metal band Sephiroth. Musically the band is reminiscent of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest .
