The Buternay is a river in France that runs through the Center-Val de Loire and Normandy regions. It rises under the name Ruisseau de la Moinerie in the Perche Regional Nature Park , near the hamlet of Bourg Neuf , on the municipal boundary of La Ferté-Vidame and Longny les Villages . The river initially drains to the north, later to the northeast and after around 24 kilometers flows into the Avre as a right tributary at the municipal boundary of Rueil-la-Gadelière and Montigny-sur- Avre .

In its upper reaches, the Buternay forms the border between the departments of Eure-et-Loir and Orne , then remains in the department of Eure-et-Loir , but in its lower reaches still runs a section as a border river to the department of Eure .
