The river has its source in the Great Fatra on the southern slope of the mountain Kráľova studňa ( 1384  m nm ) and first flows south through the valley Bystrická dolina . Immediately before Dolný Harmanec the right-hand Harmanec flows into the river, shortly before the village of Harmanec the river turns to the east, flowing parallel to the 1st order road 14 and the railway line Banská Bystrica – Dolná Štubňa . At Uľanka , the northernmost district of Banská Bystrica , in the Starohorské vrchy mountains , the Starohorský potok comes from the left side , then the river makes a bend to the southeast, along the railway line and the 1st order road 59 and after about four kilometers it comes for the last change of direction to the south. The last kilometers run in the built-up urban area, with the confluence with the Hron immediately after the road bridge on Štadlerovo nábrežie on the 1st order road 66 .
