Byton is an automobile brand of the Chinese company Future Mobility Corporation (FMC) with headquarters in Nanjing . Electric cars are to be produced under the brand name .

history

The “Byton” brand was introduced by FMC in September 2017. The name is a synonym for "Bytes on Wheels". Carsten Breitfeld, a former BMW manager who left the company in spring 2019, is the company's co-founder and CEO . Byton wants to produce electric cars and self-driving cars. The company aims to be profitable by 2021.

On January 7, 2018, Breitfeld and his team presented an electrically powered SUV called M-Byte at the electronics trade fair CES in Las Vegas , which should offer space for up to seven people. With a fully charged battery, the vehicle can travel up to 400 km, with larger batteries up to 520 km. The car is expected to be launched on the Chinese market towards the end of 2019 and will also be available in America and Europe in 2020 . With regard to autonomous driving , the vehicle should reach level 3 and from 2020 level 4 . The price of around 45,000 US dollars was named for the basic version at the beginning of 2018 .

This will be followed by other models, including a sedan which will be presented at CES 2018 in China.

Due to the corona pandemic 2020, a production stop was announced for the plant in Nanjing until the end of the year on July 1, 2020, since according to a report by ARD - foreign correspondent Steffen Wurzel, suppliers could not be paid. Most of the 450 employees at the Santa Clara site in California have been laid off, while short-time work has been registered for the 70 employees at the Munich site . Some of the Chinese employees have not been paid any wages for around four months. The company's continued existence depends on whether further investors can be found.
