Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao , mostly cited by CNR Rao , (born June 30, 1934 in Bangalore ) is an Indian chemist ( structural chemistry , solid-state chemistry ).

Life

Rao studied at the University of Mysore with a bachelor's degree in 1951 and at Banares Hindu University with a master's degree in 1953. He received his doctorate from Purdue University in 1958 (received a D. Sc. From the University of Mysore in 1961) and graduated 1959 lecturer and from 1963 professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur . From 1984 to 1994 he was director of the Indian Institute of Science . He is founding director and professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research in Bangalore. He has been visiting professor at Oxford, Purdue University, Cambridge (Professorial Fellow at King's College 1983 to 1984) and at the University of California, Santa Barbara .

Rao is considered a leading scientist in the field of solid-state chemistry and chemical materials science. Among other things, he was one of the first to synthesize two-dimensional layers of transition metal oxides, which has applications in high-temperature superconductors and other materials with special magnetic or electronic properties.

He published over 1500 papers.

From 1985 to 1989 and from 2005 he was head of the scientific advisory body of the Indian Prime Minister.

Honors and memberships

In 2010 he received the August Wilhelm von Hofmann Medal , the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1968 , the Hughes Medal and the Heyrovsky Medal in 2000 and was the first recipient of the India Science Award (2004). He is a Knight of the Legion of Honor and received the Indian State Prize Padma Shri (1974), the Padma Vibhushan (1985), the Bharat Ratna (2014) and the de Von Hippel Award (2017). In 2004 he was the first to receive the lavish Indian Science Award. He is a multiple honorary doctor , Fellow of the Royal Society , member of the National Academy of Sciences , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , the American Philosophical Society , the Indian Academy of Sciences (1989 to 1991 as its President), the Indian National Science Academy, the Russian , Polish , Serbian , Korean, Brazilian and Pontifical Academy of Sciences , the Academia Europaea , the Third World Academy of Sciences and the Académie des Sciences . In 2012, he was awarded the Chinese Academy of Sciences International Cooperation Prize for his Indian-Chinese scientific collaboration efforts.
