CB Cantabria Santander ( Club Balonmano Cantabria Santander ) was a Spanish handball club from Santander ( Cantabria region ). Until the 2007/08 season, CB Cantabria competed in the Spanish ASOBAL league .

history

The club was founded in 1975 as Grupo Deportivo Teka Santander from the already existing clubs La Salle-Authi and Clubasa (Club Balonmano Santander). The club was promoted to the ASOBAL league in 1983 and took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup for the first time in 1984/85 . From then on, Cantabria was one of the absolute top teams in Europe, winning the EHF Cup in 1993 and the European Cup Winners ' Cup in 1990 and 1998.

As early as 1994, however, the club was threatened with financial bankruptcy: The previous main sponsor TEKA withdrew and from then on sponsored the Real Madrid soccer team , so that Santander offered all players to terminate their contracts in March. The entire team remained loyal to Santander and won the EHF Champions League in 1994 as the highlight of the club's history .

In the next few years the association was helped with financial injections from the Kantanbrien region; from 1995 it was called Caja Cantabria Santander . In 1999 the club took the name Club Balonmano Cantabria ; A short time later, the TEKA company returned as the main sponsor. After a short period as Racing de Santander , the club is now called Teka Cantabria .

With the start of the new millennium, Cantabria was increasingly supplanted by other clubs such as BM Ciudad Real and SDC San Antonio . Although the club moved into the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup again in 2000, Cantabria's star continued to decline until the team in 2007 - just like another traditional club, Bidasoa Irún , was relegated to the 2nd Spanish league. Santander was only allowed to remain in the ASOBAL league due to the resignation of the financially troubled BM Altea's license and the resultant free starting place in the league . In 2008 the association was dissolved for financial reasons.
