Caesar Eugen Wegmann , also César Eugène Wegmann, often cited CE Wegmann, he himself used the first name Eugen or Eugène, (born April 18, 1896 in Schaffhausen ; † January 7, 1982 in Neuchâtel ) was a Swiss geologist who dealt in particular with the geology of Scandinavia and Greenland .

life and work

After attending grammar school in Schaffhausen, he studied geology at the University of Neuchâtel from 1915 under Émile Argand , who was doing extensive work on a tectonic map of Asia at the time. Around 1923 he received his doctorate from Argand. In 1924/25 he continued his studies in Zurich ( Paul Niggli ), Paris ( Émile Haug ) and Grenoble ( Wilfrid Kilian ) and then traveled to Norway (with JH Vogt) and Finland, where he was Jakob Johannes Sederholm's assistant in Helsinki in 1927 . Then he was in Innsbruck with Bruno Sander and in Belgium and from 1934 to 1938 he joined Lauge Koch's expeditions to Greenland . After returning in 1938, he was initially ill and worked out the results of the expedition. From 1940 until his retirement in 1964 he was a professor in Neuchâtel.

In his essay On the Interpretation of Migmatites , he introduced the concept of tectonic floors and was one of those who postulated the formation of granites through migmatization . Wegmann also dealt with geological history.

In 1956 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1959 he received the Gustav Steinmann Medal .

From 1946 to 1958 he was in the editorial team of the Geological Review of the Geological Association and participated in its renewal after the Second World War. The French Geological Society awards him the Prix Wegmann in his honor. He was a knight of the Legion of Honor and an honorary member of the Schaffhausen Natural Research Society .
