action

Father-to-be, Vaughn, and his best friend, Marcus, go on a weekend hunting trip in a remote village in the Scottish Highlands. In a village pub, the two of them are drinking with some villagers and get to know Logan, a community leader, and Iona and Kara, two young women. Marcus spends the night with Kara and Vaughn and Iona are about to kiss. However, when Vaughn explains to her that they have a pregnant fiancee, they return to the pub for another drink instead.

The next morning, Vaughn tries to shoot a deer, hungover. A fatal accident occurs in the misty forest. Instead of hitting the animal, Vaughn kills a child with his bullet who was immediately behind it. The child's father, who then threatens Vaughn with a gun, is shot by Marcus. Marcus and Vaughn decide to cover up the tragic incident by burying the bodies the following night and leaving the next morning.

After they bury the bodies, Marcus is surprised the next morning by Brian, Logan's brother. He destroyed two of his car tires and then attacked him for sleeping with Kara and giving her cocaine. The car is brought to the workshop and should be repaired by the next day. Brian reappears in the village pub, who throws an aggressive and unfriendly apology at Vaughn and Marcus. When Marcus tries to shake hands with Brian, Brian hurts him. While Marcus is recovering in the bathroom, Vaughn learns that Logan has gone looking for his nephew and brother-in-law, as they have not returned from camping. Vaughn realizes that the dead are Logan's relatives. When Marcus comes back and asks when "the two" wanted to return from camping, even though only Logan's nephew was mentioned to him, he arouses suspicion against himself among the villagers.

The following night Logan sets up a search party to find the missing. When the villagers find the grave, Marcus and Vaughn try to escape. Vaughn is captured and taken to a barn. Tied to a chair, he is asked to tell the full story. While Brian is planning to kill Vaughn, Logan suggests calling the police. After Marcus is also found, the villagers make a decision. Vaughn is promised that if he shoots Marcus he will be left alive. Otherwise Brian would kill them both. Vaughn is reluctant at first, but Logan makes it clear to him that he would have to leave his wife and unborn child alone if he did not shoot Marcus. Despite scruples, Vaughn finally shoots his friend.

Logan then asks Vaughn not to tell the police about the real events and instead to claim that Marcus drove north alone in his car.

The broken Vaughn is finally picked up by his wife and driven home. One night he goes to the nursery to calm his crying baby. As he cradles it in his arms, he stares restlessly into space.

production

Finance and staff

The film was produced by Alastair Clark and Anna Griffin of Wellington Films and Tip-Top Productions in association with Pont Neuf Productions and Head Gear Films, and has received funding from Creative Scotland and Creative England. It was the first film project ever to receive funding from both national film subsidies.

It was directed by Matt Palmer , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. It is Palmer's debut feature film as a director and screenwriter, who previously worked in these roles for several short films. Commenting on their collaboration with Palmer, producers Alastair Clark and Anna Griffin said, “It took seven and a half years to produce and we received incredible support to get there. Having already made two short films with Matt, we are now thrilled that we did Caliber with him , with a phenomenal cast and a very talented film crew. "

The score was composed by Anne Nikitin . The soundtrack for the film, which includes 16 pieces of music, was released by MovieScore Media at the end of June 2018.

Cast and filming

Filming ended in November 2016 at Beecraigs Country Park in West Lothian , Scotland

Jack Lowden and Martin McCann starred from longtime friends Vaughn and Marcus. Tony Curran plays Logan McClay, Ian Pirie played Brian McClay, and Cal MacAninch stars as Al. Kate Bracken plays Iona, Ben Stranahan took on the role of Rab Sutherland, and Cameron Jack plays Frank. Kitty Lovett took on the role of Kara.

In November 2016 filming in Beecraigs National Park in Scotland was completed. Regarding the location, Palmer said the Scottish Highlands were an obvious choice as he felt the setting would add to the existential fear of his film: “I think in some areas of the Highlands there are sometimes three policemen for three villages within a 50 mile radius. And that opens up the possibility of things happening that simply cannot happen in the city. "The filmmaker also liked the rural surroundings because it plunged him into the unknown:" The world of the city is the world that is around me, so this one isn't very exciting to me while it's much less known in the wild. ”Filming was followed by three months of post-production.

Reviews

The film convinced 95 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.4 out of a possible 10 points.

Variety's Guy Lodge thought about its release on Netflix that the film could best be enjoyed in the dark of a cinema because of the shock, atmosphere and background noise. Matt Palmer draws on a wide range of influences, from Walter Hill to the work of Ben Wheatley . Even if the film doesn’t offer much new, it’s the pure, breathless precision and dynamism of Caliber that amazed. The film's secret weapon is the gifted film editor Chris Wyatt , who keeps the pace brisk, but also unpredictable and often lingers in calm, conversation-driven scenes, Lodge continues. Ben Baird's sound design fits seamlessly into Anne Nikitin's score , according to Lodge. Cinematographer Márk Györi , who previously worked with Peter Strickland on his film Katalin Varga, works wonders in Caliber when he plays with the weather-made Scottish mountain landscape, criss-crossed with lichen, when he alternates from scene to scene with the threat and the splendor from this shows.

Wendy Ide from screendaily.com also highlights Györi's handheld camera in her review, which brilliantly captures the mindset of two men who are struggling to hide the greatest secret of their lives.

Palmer's film not only shares its thematic DNA with Deliverance from 1972, a man-versus-nature film that the director loves, but also creates the impression of one through the use of classic film grammar, with slow fades and widescreen images Films from that era, according to The Skinny’s Jamie Dunn .

Irina Blum from Cineman.ch explains that since most of the scenes take place during the night, a dark tension develops, which intensifies more and more as the film progresses, also because everything leads to the fact that as a viewer, despite morally controversial acts, you are with the two Protagonists excited. Socially critical comments also find their place in the thriller, says Blum, who cites the break-up of village communities as an example.
