Calystegia purpurata is a kind ofplantfrom the genus of the bindweed ( Calystegia ) from the family of the bindweed family (Convolvulaceae). The species is endemic to California .

description

Calystegia purpurata is a perennial or subshrub-like plant that forms a woody caudex as a perennial organ. The plant is hairless and often coated in blue-green. The branches are prostrate to strongly climbing and are up to 7 m long. The leaf blade is usually 1.5 to 5 cm long, triangular and lobed with protruding lobes. These are two- to three-pointed, the arch is V-shaped or more or less closed.

The inflorescences consist of one to five flowers , the inflorescence stalks protrude clearly above the accompanying leaves. The prophylls are 2 to 16 mm long, 0.4 to 1.5 mm wide, mostly linear in shape and set 3 to 16 mm below the calyx , mostly without overlapping it. The sepals are 7 to 14 mm long. The crown is white or cream-colored to purple in color and often more or less striped purple. It has a length of 23 to 52 mm.

distribution

The species is endemic to California near the Pacific coast . It grows in chaparral and coastal shrub formations at altitudes below 300 m.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Calystegia purpurata subsp. purpurata : It occurs in western California.
  • Calystegia purpurata subsp. saxicola (Eastw.) Brummitt : It occurs in northwestern California.
