loin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The loin (from Old High German  lentī  , kidney ), often used in the plural (the loins ) or synonymous with the lumbar region or lumbar region (Latin regio lumbalis ), is a body region in humans and mammals . Their position is not clearly defined anatomically . Structures or procedures related to the lumbar or lumbar spine are called lumbar .

anatomy

The dictionary of the German language from 1809 describes the part of the body directly “behind and under the hip bone” as the loin, namely the hip and thigh. In Pierer's Konversationslexikon of 1877, however, the loins are the "soft side parts of the abdomen", also known as soft . In the dictionary of the German language from 1876, the loin extends from the "kidney area" on the trunk over the pelvis to the thighs and is the "seat of the power of generation ". In the German dictionary , around 1880, the loin is only defined as "the kidney region of humans and mammals", that is, well above the pelvis. Meyer's Encyclopaedic Lexicon from 1975 and Brockhaus from 2006, on the other hand, call the loin the “lowest part of the back on both sides of the lumbar spine”. The current Duden (2017) writes the "area of the body over the hips and buttocks" in more general terms and also includes the " groin and genitals" in elevated language .

The medical dictionary Pschyrembel defines the loin as the "section of the lateral abdominal wall" between the lower ribs , the upper edge of the pelvis ( iliac crest ) and the lumbar spine . The anatomy textbook Prometheus differentiates between a right and left lumbar region on the abdomen . In contrast, the lumbar region is the "lower, lateral back region" according to the Springer Lexicon Medicine , and in the Roche Lexicon Medicine the loin is the "lower back part" between the ribs and pelvis. Only the last definition cited includes the lumbar spine and the eponymous kidneys as part of the lumbar region.

Which muscles belong to the lumbar region also remains undetermined. Specifically, these include the psoas major muscle ("large lumbar muscle"), psoas minor muscle ("small lumbar muscle") and quadratus lumborum muscle ("square lumbar muscle"). These skeletal muscles , located in the belly of the lumbar spine, are innervated by the anterior branches of the spinal nerves of the lumbar section of the spinal cord , the skin of the lumbar region by the posterior branches of the same nerves. The blood supply is provided by the lumbar arteries ( arteriae lumbales ), which arise segmentally from the aorta . Lymph drainage occurs through the lumbar lymph nodes .

Loin as food

The psoas muscles of pork , beef and other slaughtered animals are particularly tender and are known as fillets . Loin is also the regional name for roast beef .
