Cameron Charles "Cam" Newton (born February 25, 1950 in Peterborough , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played 129 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League and the Chicago Cougars in the course of his active career between 1966 and 1977 , Denver Spurs , Ottawa Civics and Cleveland Crusaders in the World Hockey Association .

Career

Newton spent his junior years between 1966 and 1970 with the Toronto Marlboros and Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey Association . After he had been selected in the eighth round in the eighth round of the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft , the goalkeeper switched to the professional field for the 1970/71 season. Newton spent most of his first year as a back-up. Both with the Amarillo Wranglers in the Central Hockey League behind Paul Hoganson and with Pittsburgh in the NHL. For Amarillo, Newton played 15 appearances and five for the Penguins during the season. In the following two years he was with the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League between the posts. There he shared the tasks over the course of the two years with André Gill , Paul Hoganson and Denis Herron . He also added eleven more NHL appearances to his resume.

In the summer of 1973 Newton left the Pittsburgh Penguins franchise and moved to the World Hockey Association, which competed with the NHL , as a free agent . There he was the goalkeeper of the Chicago Cougars in the following two years . About the expansion draft of the WHA in May 1975 came the goalkeeper for the 1975/76 season to the league competitor Denver Spurs , who moved to the Canadian capital Ottawa shortly after the turn of the year 1975/76 and there as Ottawa Civics completely stopped the game a few days later. As a free agent, Newton could therefore move within the league to the Cleveland Crusaders , where he ended the season. He then completed another year of play for the Erie Blades in the North American Hockey League before he declared his active career at the age of 27 for over.
