Career

Gill spent his junior years between 1960 and 1962 in his hometown with the Sorel Royals , before the goalkeeper switched from there to the professional field. There he played with the beginning of the 1962/63 season for ten years for the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League . During this period he won the Calder Cup with the team in 1969 , and his outstanding achievements in the 1966/67 season earned him a nomination for the AHL First All-Star Team and he was awarded the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award , because he had the lowest goals against goals of all goalkeepers.

During his time in Hershey, Gill was called up in December 1967 in the squad of the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League after their goalie Gerry Cheevers was injured. Gill then completed five appearances for the Bruins - his only in the NHL. He succeeded in his first game on December 23, 1967 against the New York Rangers a shutout , for which he blocked 41 shots. He set a modern NHL record at that time , which was only improved by four shots in November 2014 by Troy Grosenick .

After his ten-year engagement with the Hershey Bears, the Canadian moved to the 1972/73 season with the Chicago Cougars in the World Hockey Association , who had bought the Houston Eros the WHA transfer rights to his person. There Gill filled the post of substitute keeper. Behind Jimmy McLeod for the first year , then Cam Newton . From 1974, the goalkeeper let his career in the Southern Hockey League end. First he was in the goal of the Hampton Gulls in the 1974/75 season . There he made it into the First All-Star Team of the SHL. After he did not appear in the following year, Gill guarded the goal of the Richmond Wildcats in the same league again in the 1976/77 season . He then ended his active career at the age of 36.

Gill died in December 2014 at the age of 73 in Sorel-Tracy, the town of his birth .
