Camila Antonia Amaranta Vallejo Dowling / kaˈmila anˈtonja amaˈɾanta βaˈʝexo ˈdaʊlɪŋ / (born April 28, 1988 in Santiago ) is a politician of the Communist Party of Chile . She was the leader of the student movement in Chile and a geography student at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the Universidad de Chile (German: University of Chile). She is a member of the Central Committee of the Juventudes Comunistas de Chile (Youth Association of the Partido Comunista de Chile). Camila Vallejo was President of the Federación de Estudiantes de la Universidad de Chile (FECh for short, Student Association of the University of Chile) in 2010 and 2011 . She was also one of the spokespersons for the Confederación de Estudiantes de Chile (Confech, Association of Students of Traditional Universities in Chile) during the student protests in 2011. Since November 2013, she has been a member of the Chilean Parliament.

Life

Camila Vallejo is the daughter of Reinaldo Vallejo and Mariela Dowling. Both were members of the Communist Party of Chile in the 1970s. It is not confessional .

Camila Vallejo grew up in Macul and La Florida, both districts of Santiago de Chile , and attended the Colegio Raimapu , a private school in La Florida. In 2006 she enrolled at the Universidad de Chile to study geography. In 2007 she became a member of the Youth Association of the Communist Party of Chile. In 2008 she became advisor to the FECh, of which she was president from November 2010 to November 2011. She was the second woman in this office after Marisol Prado (1997-1998).

In 2011, Vallejo aroused public interest as a spokeswoman and leader of the Chilean student protests (along with Giorgio Jackson, student leader of the Student Union of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile , and Camilo Ballesteros, student leader of the Student Union of the Universidad de Santiago de Chile ). Vallejo has already been built up by some media as the opponent of Chile's President Sebastián Piñera . The British newspaper The Guardian found that since Subcomandante Marcos no rebel leader had charmed Latin America like Vallejo.

In August 2011, the Chilean Supreme Court (Corte Suprema de Justicia) placed Vallejo under police protection for threatening her death.

Since the end of 2011 she has been in a relationship with Julio César Sarmiento Machado (born January 29, 1983, Santa Clara , Cuba ), a senior member of the Communist Youth of Chile and a medical student. Vallejo graduated with honors ( distinción máxima ) in July 2013 . On October 6, 2013, she gave birth to their daughter.

2011 student elections

At the end of 2011, she was defeated by the more radical opponent Gabriel Boric in the student elections with a narrow difference of 189 list votes. In the elections of the FECh, every student can vote on a candidate (personal vote) or on a list (list vote). Camila Vallejo received 1868 personal votes, 550 more than the 1,318 votes for Gabriel Boric. Only the votes on the list are decisive for the office of President. Camila Vallejo was elected Vice President for a term from December 2011 to November 2012.

Spokeswoman for Confech

In addition to her position as chairwoman of the student union of the University of Chile, Camila Vallejo is also one of the spokespersons (Vocera de la Confech) of the Confederacíon de Estudiantes de Chile (Confech), an umbrella organization for all students at the universities that have a student body elected by students. The organization is led by the speakers and is one of the leading forces in the student protests in Chile 2011–2012 .

Election to the House of Representatives 2013

In November 2013, Vallejo was elected as a member of parliament in the Chilean parliamentary elections.

popularity

According to a survey conducted by a private, non-profit organization in early October 2011, Camila Vallejo is the Chilean woman most admired by Chilean youth. According to the Spanish newspaper El País Vallejo was on the list of 100 Ibero-American personalities of the year 2011. She is traded as the Gladys Marín of the 21st century, who was a well-known communist politician and general secretary of the Communist Party of Chile.

In August 2013, the American musician Conor Oberst and his emocore band Desaparecidos published a homage to Camila Vallejo under the title Te Amo Camila Vallejo .

criticism

Camila Vallejo was criticized for her trip to Cuba for the world meeting of communist youth in early April 2012. There she met Fidel Castro and praised communist rule on the island, but refused to meet dissidents. After visiting Fidel Castro, she said literally: What Fidel Castro says, reflects on and sets out to us is a description of the way for us . She received criticism from dissidents and Cubans in exile living in Cuba, but also from the Chilean opposition.
