action

The current situation in the United States is compared to ancient Rome , in which a small elite held most of the money and power. With wars and dull conversation the people would be pacified, and the exploited slaves would one day bring the empire down.

Examples are used to show the impact of capitalism and the financial crisis on ordinary people: a family who has lost their house, a pilot who gets his airline's annual salary of only $ 16,000, companies backed by secret life insurance policies earned on the death of employees, so-called “Dead Peasants” Insurances ( Tote-Bauern-Versicherung ) ( English peasants : derogatory for farmers).

The banks and the involvement of various governments with high-ranking representatives of the banking industry are presented as the cause of the problems. In particular, President Ronald Reagan , during whose term of office the increase in profits through downsizing was introduced at many American companies, and President George W. Bush , during whose term of office the economic crisis fell, to whose solution a financial package was passed by Lehman Brothers with the assistance of bank representatives , are in the criticism of Moore.

In addition to interviews with workers and representatives of the Catholic Church , who call capitalism a sin, Moore's typical provocative actions are shown, such as driving in front of various banks with an empty money transporter to personally reclaim the billions raised by taxpayers to rescue banks.

Moore also looks at the social reforms that were no longer carried out due to the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt and contrasts them with alleged achievements in Germany, Italy and Japan after the Second World War, which were mainly achieved through Roosevelt's cooperation in the reconstruction of these countries be.

The film ends with a happy ending , showing how Barack Obama takes power and shows solidarity with striking factory workers in Chicago.

Moore himself describes the film as an "excellent Appointment Film" (Engl. Date movie ). It includes “desire, passion, romance and 14,000 jobs that are cut every day. It is a forbidden love, a love whose name one dares not pronounce. Hell, out with it: capitalism. "

Reviews

“As always, Michael Moore can be accused of an extremely selective perception, distortion of facts and cheap polemics . Nor does it offer a real solution, at most it suggests that perhaps one could try again with a little socialism. But the decisive factor is: 'Capitalism: A Love Story' is an all-round honest, passionate project. The film calls for justice and change for a world in which too many people are far too bad. "

- Daniel Sander at Spiegel Online.

“The conditions that the film describes are terrifying, but Moore primarily wants to provoke - and manipulate. Instead of explaining connections, he combines randomly selected examples into a diffuse villain piece. Nevertheless, Moore's criticism of capitalism is justified - and for that very reason deserves a better film. Conclusion: Michael Moore's pointed, but also quite arbitrary polemics shows the price Americans pay for their love of capitalism. "

“Once again, the filmmaker presents his polemical criticism as a mixture of interviews, reports, populist satire and sentiment, but without finding a convincing line of argument. The optimism into which the film flows with a view to the change of government to President Obama remains rather superficial. "
