Carl-Henric Svanberg (born May 29, 1952 in Porjus , Jokkmokk municipality ) is a Swedish engineer , economist and entrepreneur . He was CEO of Ericsson from 2003 to the end of 2009 and has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of BP since January 2010 .

Svanberg holds a Masters in Applied Physics from Linköping University of Technology and a Bachelor in Business Administration from Uppsala University . After graduating in 1977, he worked for Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) in various international roles in the export department. In 1986 he moved to Securitas , the world market leader in the security sector. Four years later he was named First Executive Vice President of the Securitas Group. In 1994 he moved to the Assa Abloy group as CEO . He was then CEO of the Ericsson telephone company from April 2003 to the end of December 2009. After resigning from his position as CEO, he remained on the Ericsson Supervisory Board and holds 3,234,441 shares in the company. Svanberg was on the BP Board as Chairman-designate from September 1, 2009, and succeeded Peter Sutherland in the chair from January 1, 2010.

On June 16, 2010, Svanberg met with fellow BP leaders including Tony Hayward and Bob Dudley with US President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden to discuss BP's responsibility for the impact of the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill . He caused a media stir when he expressed BP's concern for the little people on the Gulf Coast of the United States and the threat to their livelihoods from the oil spill by saying, “We care about the small people.” Svanberg apologized for his choice of words with “ slip in translation ".

In 2007, 2014 and 2015 he took part in the Bilderberg Conference .
