Carl Appel (Romanist)

Carl Appel (born May 17, 1857 in Berlin ; † February 13, 1934 in Breslau ) was a German Romance studies and university professor .

life and work

With a doctorate in Adolf Tobler 1882 Appel received his doctorate at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin to Dr. phil. From 1886 he was a qualified lecturer at the Albertus University in Königsberg . In 1892 he was appointed full professor at the University of Breslau . For the academic year 1907/08 he was elected its rector . In 1926 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

Appel published much admired editions of the old Provençal minstrels and completed the 8th volume of Emil Levy's Provençal Supplementary Dictionary .
