Life

Carl Friedrich Freiherr von Schauroth was the son of the fortress and town commander of Coburg and, after graduating from high school in Coburg, studied at the Bergakademie Freiberg from 1837 and then from 1839 mathematics, chemistry, physics and mineralogy at the University of Heidelberg with his doctorate in 1840 ( Die Grubenwetter ). He expanded the collection of rocks, minerals and fossils started by Duke Franz Friedrich Anton von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld and his successors in the natural history cabinet of the Duke of Coburg and was its first director until 1881.
