Carl Gielen

Carl Franz Viktor Gielen (* 9. April 1900 in Münster ; † 24. September 1987 in Cologne ) was a Roman Catholic priest and Cologne Cathedral Provost .

Life

Gielen's father was the future mayor of Neuss and Munich-Gladbach Franz Gielen . After graduating from the Quirinus grammar school in Neuss and doing military service, Gielen studied theology in Bonn and became an active member of the Catholic student association Arminia Bonn in the KV , to which he felt a warm bond until the end of his life. After being ordained a priest in 1923 by Cardinal Karl Joseph Schulte , he worked in the parish of St. Antonius in Barmen . From 1925 he studied canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian Universityin Rome and was also Vice-Rector of the College of Maria dell'Anima. In 1927 he completed his studies with a doctorate to become Dr. iuris canonici .

In 1928 he became cathedral vicar in Cologne, in 1948 official of the Archdiocese of Cologne and head of the archbishopric court, in 1950 cathedral chapter and 1960 provost of the Cologne cathedral chapter . In 1978 he renounced his canonical.

Act

Gielen was a leading figure in the Cologne clergy for decades and belonged to a total of 32 committees and organizations as a member, chairman or clerical advisory board. He particularly supported history associations and associations for museums. From 1968 to 1978 he was provost of Cologne Cathedral , the preservation and restoration of which was a very special concern for him.

His estate is in the historical archive of the city of Cologne .

Honors
