Carl Hundhausen

Carl Hundhausen (born November 1, 1893 in Ückendorf , † April 15, 1977 in Essen-Rüttenscheid ) was a German public relations specialist.

life and work

Hundhausen was born the son of a grocer and attended elementary school from 1900 to 1908. He then worked in his parents' grocery store. From 1909 to 1912 he did an apprenticeship as a shoemaker, passed his journeyman's examination on January 17, 1912 theoretically and practically with “good”. He then worked as a shoemaker's journeyman in various workshops until 1914.

On November 24, 1914, he joined the army as a professional soldier and was discharged from the same on December 9, 1918 as a regular deputy sergeant and battalion clerk.

From March 19, 1919 to February 2, 1922 he was a correspondent in the cash desk of the Essen pension office. During this time, he passed a one-year examination as an external student on September 20, 1919 and, at the end of October 1921, the Abitur as an external student at the Krupp secondary school in Essen. On November 8, 1921, he enrolled at the University of Cologne .

From February 3, 1922, Hundhausen worked as a correspondent in Fried's banking department . Krupp AG and was on leave from November 1924 to the end of February 1925 for study purposes without a salary. He passed his exams with a degree in business administration and was again on leave from November 1, 1925. On December 16, 1925 he was promoted to Dr. rer. pole. PhD.

From 1927 to 1931 he worked as a banker in the USA and returned to Germany as sales director of the Hillers company in Solingen . In 1933 Hundhausen became a member of the NSDAP . In 1944 he joined the Krupp-Widia company as commercial director , where he stayed until the end of September 1956. In the 1950s he was commissioned by Krupp to transform the prevailing public image of the war criminal company into an exclusively positive image. The media researcher Peer Heinelt sums up Hundhausen's approach as follows: "The strategy he developed to link the placing of advertising orders with Krupp-friendly reporting was successful.")

In 1958 he became director of Fried. Krupp staff department (advertising, press and economics department, archive) and oversaw special tasks until the end of 1958. In 1959 he retired; until 1963 he stayed with the company as a consultant.

Hundhausen was also a managing board member of the non-profit association Villa Hügel eV from 1952 to 1969. In this capacity, he was responsible for many art exhibitions after the evacuation of Villa Hügel by the Allies from 1952. The "Haus Industrieform" ( now known as the Red Dot Design Museum after moving to the synagogue and the Amerikahaus Ruhr ) is his work.

Hundhausen was from 1958 to 1960 chairman of the German Public Relations Society . From 1969 he was a managing board member of the German Poster Museum, which he co-founded .

From 1955 Hundhausen worked as a lecturer and from 1961 he was honorary professor at the Technical University of Aachen (Public Relations for industrial companies) and from 1960 lecturer at the Folkwang School of Design (head of the Institute for Commercial Advertising Teaching).

Prizes and awards

Hundhausen received numerous honors and awards, so u. a. the honorary doctorate (Dr. rer.pol.hc) from the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (1963), the Viktor Mataja Medal (1958) and the Dr. Hegemann Prize (1964), the Wilhelm Vershofen Memorial Medal ( 1966), the plaque of honor of the city of Essen (1969) and the papal New Year's Eve (Komtur; 1973).
