Carl Ludwig Richter (born August 22, 1737 in Halle ; † May 9, 1802 in Kassel ) was a theologian and educator, from Michaelis 1779 until his death rector of the Lyceum Fridericianum in Kassel.

Life

He was a son of the actuary Johann Adolph Richter employed by the Giebichenstein office in the Duchy of Magdeburg and received his school education from 1744 at the Latin school in Halle. He then studied theology at the Friedrichs University in Halle from Easter 1753 to September 1757 .

After successfully completing his studies, he took up a position at Michaelis in 1757 as tutor of the son of the Prussian general Friedrich Christian von Hauss , the former military commandant of Leipzig . In 1760 he received the position of fourth teacher ("Quartus") at the municipal Latin school in Kassel, probably also on the recommendation of his older brother, the court judge Johann Adolph Richter († 1775). He took up this position at Michaelis in 1760, but then applied several times in vain for positions as a preacher , since the position as Quartus probably did not satisfy him financially. After the death of the incumbent since 1736 Rector Justus Heinrich Wetzel 1771 Richter was proposed in May 1772 as the new rector, but the responsible consistory not accepted, but then for the August 1772 vice-principal appointed.

Seven years later, a few weeks after the inauguration of the "Lyceums Fridericianum" founded by Landgrave Friedrich II of Hessen-Kassel by converting the Latin school on August 14, 1779 , a so-called school of scholars to prepare for university studies, Richter succeeded the Paul Veit was appointed rector for health reasons. In 1796 he received the character of a professor .

Richter was unmarried all his life. He died of pneumonia on May 9, 1802 and was quietly buried at his own request. In his memory, the Richter Medal was donated, which was awarded annually to the best high school graduates of the Lyceum. Richter's successor as rector at the Lyceum Fridericianum was Nathanael Caesar .
