Carl Offterdinger (born January 8, 1829 in Stuttgart ; † January 12, 1889 there ) was a German figure and genre painter and illustrator .

Book illustrations

Offterdinger, a pupil of Heinrich von Rustige , illustrated numerous books for children and young people , fairy tales , adventure novels and picture sheets in the second half of the 19th century .

Offterdinger is particularly known for his paintings with fairytale scenes and illustrations of literary works such as The Nutcracker by ETA Hoffmann , Till Eulenspiegel , Robinson Crusoe or Gulliver's Travels . In 1874 he also illustrated the first edition of Theodor Storm's novella Pole Poppenspäler in the magazine Deutsche Jugend .

Some of his illustrations can now be seen in the Boston Harbor Museum, among other places .
