Carl Frederik Sundt-Hansen (born January 30, 1841 in Stavanger , Norway ; † August 27, 1907 there ) was a Norwegian-Danish genre painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Sundt-Hansen, son of the businessman and city governor Lauritz Wilhelm Hansen (1816–1871) and his wife Elisa Margaretha Sundt (1814–1892), grew up in a wealthy and art-loving family in Stavanger. In 1859 he traveled to Copenhagen to study painting at the Royal Danish Academy of Art . In 1861 he went to Düsseldorf and attended the Royal Prussian Academy of Art in 1861/1862 . There was Karl Müller his teacher. He also took private lessons there from the Swiss genre painter Benjamin Vautier . In the years 1862/1863 to 1866 he was a member of the artists' association Malkasten . In 1866 he moved onParis . In 1867 he exhibited a picture that he had painted under the impression of French painting, especially the painting of Paul Delaroche , in the Christiania Kunstforeniging . For this he received good reviews. After Charles XV. of Sweden (Charles IV of Norway) had seen some of his pictures at the Paris World Exhibition in 1867 , he made him Knight of the Vasa Order . In 1871 Sundt-Hansen decided to go to Stockholm , where he worked as a court painter and was a member of the art academy . He stayed there for eleven years. Then he settled in Copenhagen, where he lived as a freelance painter from 1882 to 1896 and was also a member of the art academy. It was here that his main work, A Burial at Sea , was written in 1890 (En gravelse ombord) . On March 1, 1889, he became a Danish citizen. He later lived in Valle ( Setesdal ), where he was forgotten. However, towards the end of the 1900s, interest in his painting increased again. Shortly before his death, he was diagnosed with cancer. The unmarried man spent the last months of his life with his brother in Stavanger.

As with Olaf Isaachsen , Sundt-Hansen's painting developed from a style influenced by Norwegian national romanticism in the sense of Adolph Tidemand to a realism . His endeavors to achieve a psychological deepening and a differentiation in the representation gave his pictures a high artistic status.
