Karl Timler , also Carl Timler ; (* July 10, 1836 in Jena ; † February 10, 1905 in Jena) was a German master bricklayer , architect , author and draftsman and co-founder of the Jena Art Association on December 20, 1903 , after having been chairman of the Jena Arts and Crafts Association for 25 years .

Life

Karl Timler came from a family active in the building trade and was enrolled at the Munich building trade school from 1853 to 1855 after completing his schooling and training . After a stay in Berlin, he traveled to Germany and then, in 1856, worked as a site manager on the reconstruction of the Wartburg . The master's examination as bricklayer and stonemason was followed by a visit to the Berlin Building Academy and an 18-month stay in Italy and Greece, during which a hiking book and sketchbooks were written. In the later years (from 1883) he made numerous views of historical buildings in and around Jena as well as landscape sketches.

Since 1861, his work has included designs for churches and school buildings, industrial buildings as well as residential and commercial buildings.

For 34 years, Karl Timler gave drawing lessons on Sundays at the commercial advanced training school and also promoted young talents in his own classes , often free of charge, and gave numerous specialist lectures.

For the Jena Beautification Association, which was founded on October 7, 1858, he and Carl Friedrich Christian Heinrich Botz , master road builder, Grand Ducal Building Councilor and later honorary citizen of the city of Jena, participated in the creation of a new path to the Landgrave . In 1862 he campaigned vehemently for the preservation of the Johannistor .

He paid special attention to his family, so he took great care of the education of his children and grandchildren. After his last excursion to the southern tip of Italy in 1900, he went blind in one eye and died after a long illness on February 10, 1905 in Jena.

Politically, he was active in the Jena municipal council for 24 years .
