Carlo Gualterio

Carlo Gualterio (* 1613 in Orvieto ; † January 1, 1673 in Rome ) was Archbishop of Fermo and Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

He studied law and was thus able to become a consistory attorney. He later worked as a trainee lawyer at the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signatures and was rector of the La Sapienza University in Rome .

On March 2, 1654, Innocent X accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the title church of San Pancrazio , which had been declared a title diaconia pro hac vice, into the college of cardinals .

He was appointed Archbishop of Fermo on October 5, 1654 . As a cardinal entitled to vote, he took part in the conclave in 1655 (election of Alexander VII ) and in the conclave in 1667 with the election of Clemens IX. part. On November 14, 1667 he moved to the titular diakonia Sant'Angelo in Pescheria . On April 30, 1668, he ceded the administration of the Archdiocese of Fermo to his nephew Giannotto Gualterio . In the same year he became cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Cosmedin . On December 25, 1668 he was raised to cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Eusebio and subsequently took part in the conclave 1669-1670 , in which Clement X was elected Pope. From 1672 to 1673 he administered the finances of the College of Cardinals as treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals .

Carlo Gualterio died of a stroke on January 1, 1673 at the age of 69 in Rome . He was transferred to Orvieto and buried in the family crypt in the local cathedral .

His relatives include Cardinal Silvio Antoniani and Sebastiano Gualterio , Bishop of Viterbo and Apostolic Nuncio in France . Donna Olimpia Maidalchini and Innocent X (Giovanni Battista Pamphilj) were related to him. His great-uncle Cardinal Filippo Antonio Gualterio and his great-great-uncle Luigi Gualterio were both cardinals.
