Carlos Alfonso Guillén (born September 30, 1975 in Maracay , Aragua ) is a former Venezuelan baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB) on the position of the shortstop . He played in his professional career for the Seattle Mariners and the Detroit Tigers . Guillén has also been elected to the All-Star Team three times .

Career

Guillén signed a contract with the Houston Astros in 1992 , but never played in their shirt in the MLB. In 1998 he was swapped with Freddy Garcia for Randy Johnson to the Seattle Mariners . He made his MLB debut on September 6, 1998. First he played as a second baseman or third baseman , since Alex Rodríguez was set as the shortstops, his actual position . From 2000 Guillén was able to take his correct position, since Rodríguez moved to the Texas Rangers . In 2003, Guillén joined the Detroit Tigers. In his second year in Detroit, he was one of the top players by having the most batted in (RBI) runs , scoring the most runs , hitting the most doubles and triples , and having the second best batting average among the Tigers. In 2006 he led the MLB's shortstops in Slugging Percentage and for the first time in his career had an on base average of over .400. On August 1, 2006, he became the tenth Tigers player who managed to beat a cycle (single, double, triple, home run ). He is the first player in MLB history to keep increasing his batting average for six years.

At the beginning of the 2008 season , Guillén had to leave the position of the short stop, as Edgar Rentería , who had come from the Atlanta Braves to the Tigers, was set there. Guillén initially played on first base . After this position was taken over by Miguel Cabrera , he played on third base in late April 2008. In the 2009 season, Guillén played in leftfield . From May 2010 he was used by the Tigers on second base.
