Caroline Michelle "Carrie" Prejean (born May 13, 1987 in San Diego , California ) is an American model and was Miss California USA in 2009. In addition to some game shows and television appearances, she became known for controversial statements about same-sex marriage in the survey on the occasion of the Miss USA 2009 beauty pageant and a subsequent national debate and legal battle.

Life

Carrie Prejean was born to Will and Francine Prejean. The parents separated in 1988, the question of custody resulted in significant arguments between the parents, in which the issue of homosexuality played a role. Prejean grew up in an evangelical community in Vista , California, and graduated from high school in 2005 . In 2009 she won the Miss California USA title and then took part in the Miss USA election. She also made several appearances on television. Prejean is studying to become a teacher for special needs schools and is involved in the field of disability promotion and sports. She is an active member of The Rock Church , a non-denominational evangelical megachurch in San Diego , California.

Controversy over statements about same-sex marriage

Prejean's statement about same-sex marriage in the course of the Miss USA elections and a number of legal disputes subsequently caused a sensation in the USA and beyond .

During the Miss USA 2009 beauty pageant, she was interviewed by a jury member, blogger and temporary LGBT activist Perez Hilton , about same-sex marriage in the United States. She replied:

“Well, I think it's great that Americans can choose whether to get married one way or another. We live in a country where one can choose between same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. You know what, in my country, in my family, I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, without wanting to offend anyone out there. But that's how I was brought up, and I believe it should be between a man and a woman. "

After Hilton Prejean with respect to their response in the context of a video commentary as a "dumb bitch" (stupid bitch) had insulted, there was a nationwide controversy. She received support from, among others, the conservative commentator Ann Coulter , the investor and owner of the beauty pageant Donald Trump and Gavin Newsom , the Democratic Mayor of San Francisco . Trump described Prejean's statements as being honest and not dishonorable. Newsom stressed that it did not share Prejean's point of view, but at the same time it particularly defended her against offensive attacks because of her expression of opinion.

Subsequently, Prejean appeared, among other things, in a television commercial against same-sex marriage by the National Organization for Marriage and hired a Christian-oriented PR company.

In May 2009, Prejean compared her statements with similar statements by President Barack Obama on same-sex marriage, a referendum in California and a decision by the California Constitutional Court.

Legal disputes

After pictures (back views) of Prejean, some of which showed her as a seventeen-year-old naked, were published on a blog in May 2009, the organizers of the contest initiated infringement proceedings against Prejean. As a participant in the beauty contests, she had assured that she met the highest moral standards and that there were no corresponding full or partial nude pictures of her in circulation. K2 Productions, the organizer of the California contest, ended her contract and with it her status as Miss California due to continued contract violations in June 2009. This has been confirmed by owner Donald Trump.

Prejean claimed that K2 Productions wanted to hire her for nude photos in a men's magazine and a reality TV show, among other things . In August 2009, she sued various representatives of Miss California USA for defamation and religious discrimination, among other things . She continued to work with the National Organization for Marriage, which combats same-sex marriage and is assigned to Christian rights .

The allegations were rejected by K2 Productions and representatives of the competitions. As part of contraindications, attempts are made to claim the proceeds from a planned book by Prejean. This was written as Miss California USA in violation of the specifications of the competition contract. Prejean is also being sued for the return of a pre-competition plastic surgery loan of $ 5,200.

The mutual lawsuits by Prejean and the Miss California Contest were withdrawn in November 2009. According to a series of reports based on information from the web portal TMZ.com , which is known for paparazzi reporting , the settlement came shortly after opposing attorneys presented a private and never-published explicit "sex video" Prejeans as evidence to the court. Prejean refuses to provide any further information about the circumstances, which among other things led to a scandal on the talk show Larry King Live .

consequences

She is now considered a political symbolic figure and has been compared to Anita Bryant , among others . Together with, among others, Ann Coulter, Phyllis Schlafly and Michele Bachmann , she was in a since 2005 appearing calendar to great conservative Americans of the conservative ( "Great American Conservative Women") think tank Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute depicted. The first edition of 25,000 copies published in 2010 was sold out immediately.

Michael Fullilove sees striking parallels between Carrie Prejean and Sarah Palin , who was running for Vice President in 2008 . Both were brought into the public eye as former beauty queens by older men (Trump and Senator McCain) and, even after a certain crash, both were at the focus of political and cultural self-discovery processes in conservative America.

According to Meghan McCain , who is known to be critical of Palin and who takes a differentiated stance at Prejean, it is hypocritical if, in the case of Prejean and also within the Republican supporters, any personal scandal is covered up or not taken seriously due to a critical attitude towards same-sex marriage.
