Carry on Oi !! is the third part of Garry Bushell's sampler series for the Oi! -Music. It was published in August 1981. The series began in 1980 with Oi! The album .

History of origin

After the disaster of the previous album Strength Thru Oi! (the album was withdrawn shortly before reaching the top 50 of the UK charts) Garry Bushell and Decca Records parted ways . After the Southall incidents , in which skinheads messed with Asian youths after an Oi! Concert and this led to riots, the skinhead scene met with a wave of contempt. The press gave the Oi! Scene a right-wing extremist backdrop, while the British National Front tried to co-opt the skinheads. Bushell, disgusted by the bad image of skinheads in the British media, tried to smooth things over with this album. He understood Oi! under the motto "having a laugh and having a say". After the rather London-heavy previous albums, he directed the album this time to the entire United Kingdom and tried to give an overview of the entire scene at that time.

The title of the compilation was based on the well-known Carry-On film series , which consisted of around 30 British comedies . This was important to Bushell from two points of view: On the one hand, he was able to ignore the martial image of the two previous albums; on the other hand, he understood the title as a wish that the Oi! Movement should continue. The compilation also included liner notes by Garry Bushell, as well as some poems by street poets such as Garry Johnson and Raymy Boyle, who were ideologically close to the Oi!

Cover

After the photo covers of the first two albums (the first Micky Geggus from the Cockney Rejects , the second the right-wing extremist Nicola Vincenzio "Nicky" Crane), the cover of Carry on Oi !! contribute to mitigation. The comic cover shows a naked woman whose husband unexpectedly comes home. You see a punk who is trying to hide in the closet. Another person in jeans is hiding under the covers, a third is jumping through the closed window, and a fourth person is hiding under the bed. Of the latter two, only the Dr. Martens shoes are recognizable. An electric guitar is leaning against the wall, and jeans with suspenders lie on the bed. A sign hangs over the bed with the inscription "Love Thy Neighbor", a saying from the 3rd book of Moses ("You shall love your neighbor as yourself." ( Lev 19:18  EU )).

The album is dedicated to "the spirit of Sid James and Che Guevara ". Sid James was an English actor who starred in the Carry On ... series. Che Guevara was mentioned because it "permanent rebellion" ( permanent rebellion would) symbolize while Sid James for "eternal desire" ( perpetual loss would be). In the liner notes for the re-release, however, Bushell distances himself from Che Guevara's political views.

The back cover shows a map of England and the various bands that are assigned to their hometowns with arrows.

success

The album was very successful, 35,000 copies of the first pressing sold. The reviews, especially in Melody Maker, were almost entirely positive. The album missed the UK Top 40, but was able to place in the Top 75. In the course of the release, bands like The Exploited (on the first part of the compilation) and The Business became more successful, the former even placed in the British Top 40.

Song and artist information

With the JJ All Stars, a ska band was represented on the compilation for the first time .

Suburban Rebels of The Business is Brian Higgins, a militant union member dedicated to the UCATT (Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians). The song was written by Garry Johnson.

The gonads was Garry Bushells own band he put together for the album and he already in 1980 sounds wink abfeierte. On the album, with Tuckers Ruckers Ain't no Suckers, they intone a humorous announcement to their colleagues from The 4-Skins : We taught the 4 Skins all they know and opened the B-side of the record version. The band members of The Business hid behind the line-up.

The two songs by Peter and the Test Tube Babies were recorded exclusively for the compilation and are only available as a studio version on the sampler.

Blitz were not enthusiastic about their two contributions, Nation on Fire and Youth :

“ I wasn't happy with the recordings. Of the two guitar breaks , Martin Hooker (producer of the two songs - note) took the worse one, the one that was out of rhythm. We did five guitar overdubs and backing vocals too . I don't believe in the garbage that a band should go into the studio, play the song once and then say, 'This is punk'. The single costs £ 1.10 anyway . " "

- Guitarist Nidge Miller : Sounds, March 6, 1982

With Walk On from Oi! The Comrade completes the compilation of a drunk version of You'll Never Walk Alone .
